Back in 2001 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone eked out a respectable billion dollars. Daniel Radcliffe and the gang appeared on magazine covers and seemed set to take over the world. And obviously they still could, as Emma Watson and Rupert Grint have come along nicely as actors, and Radcliffe himself occasionally makes the news for things that aren't particularly Potter-related.

However, right now you'd have to say that Robert Pattinson has capitalized the most off of his portrayal of Cedric Diggory, and he's not tied up in Potterland until 2011 like the rest of the gang (spoiler!). Of course, he will be tied up with Twilight until 2011, but he'll only have spent three years in the "Edward" shell as opposed to the Potter Gang's decade. Additionally, he's now considered a sex symbol, whereas Radcliffe is considered an icon. The difference? Audiences allow their sex symbols to try new things (Brad Pitt, Justin Timberlake, Johnny Depp) while icons are trapped into the character they originally became known for (Macaulay Culkin, Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Soleil Moon Frye).

I think the reason is psychological. We expect those considered "sexy" to push boundaries, to try new things, to challenge us. From our icons we want safety, comfort, and the knowledge that they are always exactly what we thought they were. Which means Radcliffe will likely never escape the glasses-and-wand look in our heads. All of this adds up to Robert Pattinson being uniquely positioned to dominate the next decade of film. He'll be set up to take whatever parts he likes. It may not work out, as occasionally sex symbols burn out (see: Rourke, Mickey) but you'd love to be his agent right now. And with that meandering third person omniscient reference I'll digress.

Como você sente por ter sido escolhido em meio a tantos outros atores? Os fãs do livros conseguiram 75.000 assinaturas porque não queriam você. Como você se sentiu em relação a isso?
Quando você vai a um teste para um papel que muitos consideram o homem perfeito, você espera que as pessoas tenham dúvidas. Mas, eu realmente não me importo.

Há muitas meninas que gostariam de ir para a cama com você. Como você lida com isso?
Eu não sei. Não tenho tempo o suficiente para ficar em um lugar. Eu apenas conheço jornalistas. Mas, é realmente muito estranho que meninas de 10 anos venham até mim e digam "Por favor, me morda!".

Falando em mordidas, quem você gostaria de morder?
Eu não acho que gostaria de morder alguém. Eu não gosto de mordidas.

Você alguma vez teve aulas de como se comportar? Seus fãs são jovens. Houve alguém que tenha lhe dito o que fazer e como fazer?
Sim! Eles me enviaram a um centro para aprender como me comportar com a mídia. Eu achei muito estúpido. Provavelmente eu posso fazer o que eu quiser porque interpreto um vampiro. Eu deveria me comportar como um cara "mau". É hilário. Eu lembro que quando eu fui ao centro, eu me divirtia com as perguntas deles e eles pareciam irritados. Eles me acusaram de me opor a aprender como deveria me comportar diante da mídia.

O que é mais importante para você? Ser ator ou músico?
As duas coisas são realmente importantes para mim. Acho que as levo muito a sério. Digo, não tenho escrito músicas há um bom tempo, não quero ser outroa tor que atuou em um filme de sucesso e depois lançou um disco. Eu quero compor um disco realmente muito bom, mas em um momento em que isso não vá ser comparado a atuar.

Que tipo de música você quer fazer? Indie rock ou folk?
Folky rock!

Tem uma música sua na trilha sonora de Crepúsculo. A diretora do filme pediu a você que a compusesse?
Bem, eu escrevi esse música há muito tempo. Um membro da equipe mostrou para a diretora e ela colocou numa cena sem me avisar. Inicialmente, eu não reconheci. Eu fiquei feliz e sugeri que colocassem, mantendo meu anonimato, mas eles não deixaram por causa do marketing. Foi a minha primeira música a ser gravada oficialmente.

Como era sua vida antes de conseguir o papel de Edward Cullen?
Ano passado, eu tinha um ótimo apartamento no Soho, onde você podia ir ao telhado e ter uma ótima vista. Eu tocava algumas músicas e tentei gravá-las. Mas, aí eu fui para a Espanha gravar o filme "Little Ashes" e tudo mudou. Foi o primeiro filme que me fez pesquisar sobre alguma coisa. Eu ainda não vi o filme, mas independente de ter ficado bom ou ruim, ele certamente mudou o modo como me sinto em relação a atuar e me tornou mais disciplano em relação ao que posso fazer quando vejo um script.

Como você pagava por um apartamento grande no Soho?
Não era grande. Na verdade, era o menor apartamento que você já viu e era vazio. Tinha apenas duas cadeiras de jardim e nada mais. Nada de tapetes ou aquecedores nem banheiro. Eu tinha que ir para a casa dos meus pais para tomar banho. Mas, era perfeito. Eu achava meu estilo de vida boêmio. Fiquei triste quando tive que deixar o apartamento.

Por que você o deixou?
Porque há algumas reformas em Londres e o aluguel subiu para 5.000 libras. Eu estava nos Estados Unidos por um ano inteiro devido às filmagens de Crepúsculo. Eu estava pagando por um apartamento no qual meus amigos estavam morando. Então, eu o deixei.

Você sente falta de Londres?
Sim, muita. Eu estive lá há dois dias e fiquei surpreso pela falta que eu senti da cidade.

Onde você vive agora?
Em nenhum lugar.

Então, você é um boêmio outra vez?
Sim, de certa forma...

Você está ansioso para ser um vampiro pelos próximos 10 anos?
Sim, mas não vai durar tanto assim porque vampiros não envelhecem. Então, não posso fazer isso por mais do que os próximos dois anos. Seria ridículo.

Para quantos filmes você assinou contrato?
Para três filmes. As filmagens de Lua Nova já começaram.

O que você acha que deixa as pessoas tão interessadas em vampiros agora?
Eu não sei. É como um fenômeno. Alguma coisa faz sucesso e agora todo mundo está filmando roteiros sobre vampiros.

Você gosta de vampiros?
Sim. Mas, eu não entendo aqueles que dizem gostar de tudo que está relacionado a vampiros. Eu gostei do primeiro Nosferatu e coisas assim.

Você é viciado em alguma coisa?
Eu era muito viciado em Van morrison.

How do you feel about getting the role, while there were casted so many actors? The fans of the book got 75.000 signs because they didn’t want you. How did you feel about it?
When you are going to an audition for a role that many consider as the perfect man, you expect people to be suspicious. But I don’t really care.

There are many girls that would like to go to bed with you. How do you handle it?
I don’t know. I don’t have enough time to stay in a place. I only meet journalists. But it’s really weird that 10-years old fellows come to me and say “Please bite me!” .

Speaking of biting, who you’d like to bite?
I don’t think I’d like to bite anyone. I don’t like biting.

Have you ever had lessons to manage your profile? Your fans are young people. Was there anyone who told you what to do and how to be?
Yes! They sent me in a centre to learn how to manage my profile for the media. I thought that it’s very stupid. Probably I can do whatever I want because I’m a vampire in the big screen. I was supposed to have the profile of the “bad” guy. It’s hilarious. I remember that when I went to that centre, I was having humor to their questions and they looked annoyed. They accused me of opposing to learn how to manage myself for the media.

What is most important to you? To be an actor or a musician?
Both are really important to me. I think I take them seriously. I mean that I haven’t written music for a long time, I don’t want to be another actor who played in a successful movie and then released an album. I want to compose a really good album, but sometime that it won’t be comparable to acting.

What kind of music do you want to make? Indie rock or folk?
Folky rock!

You have a song in the Twilight OST. Have you been asked from the director to write it?
Well, I’ve written it a long time ago. A crew member gave it to the director and she put it in a scene, without telling me. At first, I didn’t recognize it. I was happy and I suggested putting it, retaining my anonymity but they didn’t let me because of the marketing. That was my first song that was recorded officially.

How was your life before getting the role of Edward Cullen?
Last year I had a great apartment in Soho where you could go to the roof and watch the great view. I played music and I tried to record it. But then I went to Spain for the movie “Little Ashes” and everything changed. It was the first time that I was researching about something. I haven’t seen the movie yet but either if it’s bad or good, it surely changed the way I feel about acting and made me more obedient about what I can achieve of acting when I see the scripts.

How did you pay for a big apartment in Soho?
It wasn’t big. Actually, it was the smallest you’ve ever seen and it was empty. It only had two garden chairs and nothing else. No carpet, no heating, no bathroom. I had to go to my parents’ house to take a bath. But it was perfect. I thought my lifestyle was bohemian. I was sad when I left it.

Why did you leave it?
Because there are some renovations in London and the rent raised 5.000 pounds. I was in U.S.A. for a whole year because of the filming of Twilight. I was practically paying for an apartment that my friends were living in. So I left it.

Do you miss London?
Yes, very much. I was there before two days and I was surprised of how much I miss it.

Where do you live now?
Nowhere.

So you’re a bohemian guy again?
Yes, someway…

Are you excited that you’re going to be a “vampire” for the next ten years?
Yes but that’s not going to last so much because vampires aren’t getting old. So I can’t do it for more than the next two years. It will be ridiculous.

For how many movies have you signed?
For three movies. The filming for New Moon has already began.

What do you think makes people so much interested in vampires right now?
I don’t know. It’s like domino phenomenon. Something is successful and then everybody is filming scripts for vampires.

Do you like vampires?
Yes. But I don’t understand those who say that they like everything that is related with vampires. I liked the first Nosferatu and things like that.

Are you addicted to something?
I was very addicted to Van Morrison.
