How do you feel when little girls get very excited to you, as if you were a rockstar?
To be honest, I take it as something that has nothing to do with me. They are excited for my character Edward, which is the representation of the perfect guy.

Has fame agreed with you?
It’s a phenomenon that doesn’t seem to end, and my brain hasn’t finished processing it. Everytime I see the fans it tuns into something quite bizarre. In Mexico, Italy and now in the United States where I’ve been promoting the movie. People have reacted with screams and I’m just getting used to the idea.

Any weird fan anecdotes?
There was a group of girls that left little notes in my car, outside of my apartment. One of the first notes said: I’m not weird, but please call me. The next day the note said: Please don’t ignore me. And the next day it said I’m going to kill myself if you keep ignoring me! (but I’m not weird, ok?).

How did you prepare for the role of Edward?
I based my performance on James Dean’s Rebel Without a Cause because I thought it would be fun to have that style for a vampire. I changed my entire body language a bit , I ran a lot, I practiced boxing for two hours a day for two months and I can honestly say I had never been so fit. Oddly enough, I’ve never been good in sports.

How was your relationship with Kristen Stewart?
Kristen in amazing, and your first impulse is to ask her for her phone number. But then I forced myself to remember that 90% of what you do on screen is acting and make things up. I enjoyed the process of creating these characters with her. We would spend all night talking about our scenes and the next day we would defend out points of view. That creative energy made us have a very special bond.

What can you say to parents who see the movie poster in which you’re seducing a young girl?
They should keep in mind that vampires can’t have sex. That theme is very important for parents, because in the books there’s an underlying message of abstinence and how important it is. I also think that the character of Bella in kind of a role model because she’s sensitive and passionate. To be honest, the content in Twilight is pretty harmless.

What were you like as a teenager?
I loved to go to the movies. I saw tons of movies. I used to write a lot too. I considered myself a writer.

Is it true you hate to change clothes?
Yes, I rarely do it. For this interview I wore this clean pair of jeans, but there have been moments were I can’t even stand my own smell.

Is this a tradition of yours or something?
I just have very few clothes that I like. And I’m always traveling, so I have no time to wash it. It’s pathetic, why am I telling you this?

How can you manage to make your hair stand up like that?
I have it like this since I rolled out of bed. It’s just grease. I just don’t wash it, ever.

Did you go through some sort of trauma while showering when you were a kid?
My dad loved to brush my hair and I hated that. It’s funny how part of my personality has a lot to do with my hair.

Describe your bedroom.
My bedroom in my parents house hasn’t changed much since I was 10. But the room where I sleep right now is very disgusting. Possible not very sanitary. It’s like a bum lives in there. It’s like an animal’s cage.

What to do you do on your time off?
I watch movies, I read, I play all kinds of music. Honestly, I?m not that very interesting.

What’s your type of girl?
I don’t know, my tastes change all the time. I used to love crazy girls who were hard to get. But not anymore. Right now I don’t have a special type.

Are you dating anyone?
No, I’m promoting the movie right now.

RP: No, I have not had the chance, I discovered him in the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. I knew then that I would be an actor one day. My life has changed dramatically. RP: Eu não gosto de me expor, porque eu não estou procurando por fama. Aos 16 anos eu comecei a pensar sobre o que eu queria para a minha vida. Estar nas capas de revistas não era algo estivesse na minha lista.

SI: Como você faz para resistir a algumas de suas fãs encantadoras? Você tem milhões delas agora...
RP: É estranho porque as garotas que me reconhecem tem 12 ou 35 anos. Eu acho que as fãs de Crepúsculo são basicamente pré-adolescentes e as mães delas. Eu ainda não conheci uma garota da minha idade que tenha me dito que adorou meu papel como Edward. Isso me ajuda a manter os pés no chão.

SI: A imprensa americana coloca você como o sucessor de Orlando Bloom, o novo cara britânico que chama a atenção das adolescentes. O que você acha disso?
RP: É estranho, proque eu não me vejo como um astro, nem por um segundo. Eu tenho uma idéia específica da carreira que eu quero ter e eu prometi a mim mesmo que eu não participaria de um filme sem me interessar por ele, apenas pelo dinheiro. Guarde essa entrevista; algum dia você poderá me provocar quando eu aceitar um papel num filme qualquer apenas por um grande cheque! (risos)

SI: Como você planejava o futuro quando tinha 17 anos, a idade do Edward em Crepúsculo?
RP: Eu tinha um diário no qual eu escrevia todos os meus pensamentos. Eu o usei dos 15 aos 20 anos. Era um livro no qual eu escrevia enredos, idéias, bem como memórias. Talvez eu devesse queimá-lo agora...

SI: Que tipo de garoto você era?
RP: Eu era tímido, voltado para mim mesmo e eu não tinha qualquer auto-estima. O ano em que eu tinha 17 foi um dos piores da minha vida, porque eu estava me procurando, me conhecendo.

SI: Então, esse diário também descreve suas histórias de amor?
RP: Sim. Eu me apaixonei apenas duas vezes na minha vida. Eu tive uma ótima história de amor por 3 anos.

SI: Seu cabelo bagunçado deu início a uma nova moda.. Foi sua idéia?
RP: É a coisa mais engraçada que já me aconteceu! Eu nunca pensei que fosse ter tanta repercursão! Eu queria me cabelo parecesse como... quando eu levanto da cama! (risos) Eu odeio ficar sentado por uma hora para fazer cabelo e maquiagem. Então, eu propus filmar sem maquiagem e deixar meu cabelo como ele ficava quando eu acordava. Eu achei que era perfeito para representar um vampiro.

SI: E hoje em dia?
RP: É uma completa insanidade! Um cabeleireiro vai comigo para todos os lugares e se certifica que meu cabelo tenha essa aparência bagunçada antes de qualquer aparição pública. Eu queria alguma coisa simples, mas acho que estraguei issso!

SI: E quanto aos seus olhos? Eles são muito especiais no filme.
RP: Usar lentes de contato foi a coisa mais terrível que eu tive que fazer para representar o Edward. Eu tenho olhos muito sensíveis e era uma tortura diária colocar aquelas lentes todas as manhãs. Eu acordava às 4 da manhã para passar por isso. Era como ter areia nos meus olhos durante todo o dia.

SI: Você está preparado para usar aquelas lentes de contato pelos próximos três filmes?
RP: Nunca! Eu já falei aos produtores que eles precisam achar algo mais prático... Eles podem mudar a cor dos meus olhos com algum efeito especial! Eu não quero nunca mais ter que ver aquelas malditas lentes! (risos)

SI: Você gostaria de ser imortal como o seu personagem?
RP: Não. Talvez eu seja muito novo para perceber as vantagens de uma vida eterna, mas eu não tenho medo de envelhecer e morrer. Me pergunte isso novamente quando eu estiver em meu leito de morte; talvez eu dê uma resposta diferente nesse momento.

SI: Você entende a fascinação que as pessoas têm por vampiros?
RP: Sim, porque eu gosto de beber meu prórpio sangue. Claro que eu não morderia outra pessoa para beber o sangue dela, mas eu tenho o reflexo de colocar meu dedo na boca quando me corto, por exemplo. Sangue não me incomoda, então eu posso ajudar alguém que esteja sangrando... sem pensar em beber o que está escorrendo! (risos)

SI: O que vai acontecer 2009?
RP: Meu único desejo para 2009 é raspar meu cabelo, mas não acho que os produtores de Crepúsculo concordariam com isso! (risos)

SI: Many of your fans see your character in you. Tell us, who is the real Robert Pattinson?
RP: I’m a lot more boring and less fascinating than Edward, that’s for sure. I love to read and my passion is music. When I’m not shooting, I perform in little pubs where nobody knows who I am. My ideal would be to be like Van Morrison in his beginnings. I’m obsessed with his first albums.

SI: Do you consider yourself like the good looking guy that everyone is talking about?
RP: Not at all! I stopped auditioning for months because I was not self-confident. When I read Twilight, I didn’t see me at all as Edward. We describe him as someone with a sublime body, while I’m… Let’s just say that I don’t have «chocolate bar» abs! And I could not think about spending four hours a day in a gym. I was one of the last to pass the audition and I didn’t believe in it at all.

SI: Do you like bodybuilding now?
RP: No, I hate it!

SI: People say that you’re hiding your girlfriend. Is that true?
RP: I don’t want to get exposed, because I’m not looking for celebrity. At 16 I began to think about what I wanted to do with my life. To be on covers of magazines was not something on my list.

SI: How do you succeed in not succumbing to some of your charming fans? You have millions of them now…
RP: It’s weird because the girls who recognize me are 12 or 35 years old. I think Twilight fans are pretty much preteens and there mothers. I didn’t meet a girl of my age yet who told me she loved my part as Edward. It helps to keep my feet on the ground.

SI: American press presents you as Orlando Bloom’s successor, the new British guy who gets the teenagers attention. What do you think about that?
RP: It’s strange, because I don’t see myself as a star, not for a second. I have a specific idea of the career I want to have and I promised myself that I will not take part in a movie, without interests, only for the money. Keep this interview; someday you’ll be able to tease me when I accept a part in a trashy movie just to get a big check! (laughs)

SI: How did you plan the future when you were 17 years old, Edward’s age in Twilight?
RP: I used to have a diary in which I was writing all my thoughts. I used it from the age of 15 until I was 20. It was a book in which I would write scenarios, ideas, as well as memories. Maybe I should burn it now…

SI: What kind of boy were you?
RP: I was shy, withdrawn and I didn’t have any self-esteem. The year when I was 17 was one of the worst of my life, because I was searching for my place.

SI: So this diary describes also your love stories?
RP: Yes. I fell in love only two times in my life. I had a great love story for 3 years.

SI: Your messy hair started a new fashion… Was it your idea?
RP: It’s the funniest thing that ever happened to me! I never thought that look would be such a big deal! I wanted my hair to be like..when I jump out of bed. (laughter) I hate to sit for an hour to get my hair and my makeup done. So I proposed to shoot without makeup and to keep my hair as it looks when I wake up. I thought it was perfect to get into the skin of a vampire.

SI: And today?
RP: It’s completely insane! A hairdresser is following me everywhere, and he makes sure that my hair has this messy look before every public appearance. I wanted something simple, but I think I blew it!

SI: What about your eyes? They are so special in the movie.
RP: Wearing contact lenses is the most terrible thing I had to endure to be Edward. I have very sensitive eyes and it was a daily torture to put those lenses on every morning. I was waking up at 4am to suffer this living death. It was like having sand in my eyes all day long.

SI: Are your ready to wear those contact lenses for the next three movies?
RP: Never! I already told the producers they had to find something else more practical… They can change the color of my eyes with some special effect! I don’t ever want to see those damned lenses again! (laughter)

SI: Would you like to be immortal like your character?
RP: No. Maybe I’m too young to realise the joy of an eternal life, but I’m not afraid of getting old or to die. Ask me again on my deathbed; maybe I’ll answer differently at that moment.

SI: Do you understand the fascination that people have for vampires?
RP: Yes because I like to drink my own blood. Or course I would not bite someone else to drink his, but I have the reflex to put my finger in my mouth when I get a cut for example. Blood doesn’t bother me, so I can help someone who’s bleeding… without thinking about drinking what’s flowing! (laughter)

SI: What’s coming in 2009?
RP: My only wish for 2009 is to shave my head, but I don’t think the Twilight producers would agree to it! (laughs)
