Para você, o personagem mudou? Como?
Estou muito surpreso com o quão tranquilo estou com tudo isso. Eu estava muito nervoso antes, especialmente com todas essas expectativas. Mas, como deu tudo certo com Crepúsculo, acho que estou menos nervoso agora.

O que você pode nos contar sobre Edward nessa sequência?
Ele se sente como se houvesse perdido tudo desde que James, Victoria e Laurent apareceram na vida dele. Para ele, tudo saiu do controle e ele está se esforçando para se manter calmo, fingindo que tudo está bem. É por isso que tudo acontece mais rápido dessa vez; porque ele já vinha pensando nisso há algum tempo.

E ele acha que está condenado de qualquer forma, certo?
Sim, na verdade, ele se sente assim desde o primeiro filme. E nesse filme ele pensa que está fazendo a coisa certa, mesmo que depois perceba que cometeu um erro.

Edward é um pouco malvado nesse filme, não é?
Eu não acho que ele seja malvado nesse filme. Acho que ele é malvado no próximo (risos). Ele está apenas perdido e toma uma atitude tipicamente masculina de estragar tudo quando encontra alguém que ama por ficar se questionando o tempo inteiro. Construindo uma Saga

O seu retorno é muito importante no livro. Você está nervoso em relação a isso?
Com certeza. Eu tinha medo de que ausência acabasse não sendo realmente uma ausência. Eu não queria aparecer de modo algum, como no livro. Eu queria que você apenas uma voz. Acredito que isso teria dado mais força e poder ao meu retorno. Mas, eles decidiram fazer visões ao invés de ter apenas a minha voz. Ela me vê. E isso é difícil porque você precisa atuar o mínimo possível, sem que pareça "morto". Você é a criação de uma outra pessoa na mente dela. E eu não queria saturar o filme com a minha presença.

Foi difícil trocar de diretor?
Sim, um pouco. Catherine tem um estilo muito específico e uma atmosfera muito definida e única; e, nesse, o clima é totalmente diferente. Mas, Chris é ótimo e o esse filme será bem diferente. Catherine tem um ponto de vista em relação ao mundo que não possui nenhum sarcasmo. O Chris pode ser muito sarcástico e enxergar as coisas de um ponto de vista mais obscurso. Esse é um filme muito mais obscuro.

Como é a sua relação com o Taylor? Você se sente ameaçado pela presença ou pelos músculos dele?
Sim, eu me sinto um pouco ameaçado (risos). Ele tem um aperto de mão muito forte, então, é, ele é uma pessoa muito intimidadora.

O quanto você trabalhou com efeitos especiais?
Eu fiz algumas cenas na tela verde, basicamente para as minhas "aparições". O que eu gosto é que o Chris está fazendo aparições muito sutis, você quase não as percebe.

Qual a cena você estava mais ansioso para gravar?
Há alguns sonhos que as pessoas não estão esperando. Eles são estranhos. Bella tem pesadelos terríveis nos livros, então nós pensamos na maneira mais perturbadora e assustadora de mostrá-los no filme. Eu não sou realmente o Edward nessas cenas, sou uma versão das inseguranças dela.

Você teve medo de comprometer com uma sequência que poderia lhe comprometer e fazê-lo deixar passar outras oportunidades que talvez não se sinta motivado para fazer em alguns anos?
Um pouco, mas a verdade é que é muito gratificante fazer parte de algo com o qual as pessoas se importam tanto. Porque você trabalha mais do que o normal. Você estava animado para filmar na Itália com o resto do elenco?
Sim, bastante. Eu acho que o Michael Sheen foi brilhante como Aro. Eu estava lendo uma cena onde eu devia ser destruído por uma menininha, simplesmente, e eu achei maravilhoso. Eu normalmente não me importo com esse tipo de coisa, mas aco que ficaria ótimo nesse filme. O Chris e eu encontramos uma maneira de eu me contercer de dor na tela, sem ter que ficar rolando pelo chão, e isso foi muito desagradável.

E como era o set?
Ele tinha um visual forte, muito forte. E era tão legal. Era o dia de São Marcus, então todo mundo estava usando capas vermelhas e, visualmente, ficou incrível.

O Efeito Crepúsculo

O que aconteceu na sua vida com todo esse fenômeno?
É estranho. Outro dia, eu estava jantando e havia uma revista com minha foto na capa. E isso é como ficar no meio da tempestade: você realmente não se dá conta do que está acontecendo. E olhar para essas capas e perceber é que sobre você que as pessoas estão falando, dizendo "Robert e Kristen, isso e aquilo", é muito bizzaro.

Por que você acha que existe uma adoração tão grande a esse personagem?
Não sei. Eu realmente não sei. Quando eu leio o livro, tento encontrar coisas com as quais possa me relacionar com ele, não procuro as razões pelas quais as meninas o amam tanto.

Poderia ser por que ele é perigoso?
Eu acho que é porque ele está disposto a deixar tudo por ela; esse é o apelo.

Você ainda tem uma banda?
Eu não tempo para ter uma banda no mento. Mas, é ótimo saber que meus amigos em Londres, os que escreveram músicas para Crepúsculo comigo, estão recebendo contratos de gravação por causa de suas relações comigo e com Crepúsculo. Eu costumava tocar em pubs com três pessoas, agora eles estão esgotando os ingressos para locais com capacidade para 500 pessoas.

Qual a diferença entre atuar e compor/cantar uma música?
A música coloca você numa posição mais vulnerável, porque você está no palco e recebe uma reação imediata. Mas, por outro lado, você fica mais livre porque não está interpretando um personagem.

É estranho que as pessoas reconheçam seu nome agora?
Sim. É engraçado, também. Eu conversei com Will Smith antes de apresentar os Oscars e perguntei a ele o que eu devia fazer no palco e ele disse "Não tente fazer nada engraçado, apenas leia o que está escrito. Você pode ser engraçado quando estiver apresentando pela quarta vez".

Você gostaria se tornar imortal?
Não sei. Se eu tivesse uma razão pela qual viver para sempre, sim.

Has the character changed for you? And how so?
I’m very surprised at how relaxed I am with everything. I was very nervous before, especially with all the expectations. But since Twilight did well, I think I’m less nervous now.

What can you tell us about Edward in this sequel?
He feels like he’s lost everything since James, Victoria and Laurent appeared in his life. For him, everything spiraled out of control for him, and he’s struggling to stay afloat by pretending that everything is fine. So that’s why everything happens faster this time; he’s been considering it for a while.

And he thinks he’s doomed anyway, right?
Yes, actually from the first movie he feels that way. And in this movie he thinks he’s doing the right thing, even if later he realizes he made a mistake.

Edward is a little mean in this movie, isn’t he?
I don’t think he’s mean in this one. I think he’s mean in the next movie (laughs). He’s just lost and he takes the typical male attitude of finding a person he loves and throwing away everything because of his self-doubts. And then he realizes, after he messed up, that you only have few chances. And that’s the good thing about Bella.

She keeps giving him those chances.
Yes, but for her is not even about giving him another chance. She just knows more about the relationship than him, and he just blames himself for everything.

Have you ever been that way?
I’m always that way! In every relationship I’ve been this way, it’s ridiculous.

Do you dump them?
No, they actually dump me (laughs).

Building a Saga

Your return in the movie is very important. Are you nervous about that?
Definitely. What I was worried about was that the absence was not really going to be an absence. I didn’t want to be there at all, like in the book. I just wanted there to be a voice. I think that could’ve given more strength and power to my return. But they decided to have visions, not just my voice. She sees me. And that’s hard because you need the least ammount of acting, without being dead. You’re someone else’s creation on their mind. And I didn’t want to saturate the movie with my presence.

Was it hard changing directors?
A little bit, yes. Catherine has a very specific style, and a very defined and unique atmosphere; and in this one, the mood is extremely different. But Chris is great, and this movie will be very different. Catherine has a point of view about the world, that is completely stripped away from any cynicism. And Chris can be more cynical, and see verything from a darker point of view. This is a much darker movie.

How well do you get along with Taylor? Do you feel threatned by his presence or his muscles?
Yes, I do feel a little bit threatned (laughs). His hand shake is very strong, so yes, he’s an intimidating person.

How much did you work with special effects?
I did some scenes on green screen, mostly for my “apparitions”. What I like is that Chris is doing very subtle apparitions, you barely notice them.

What scene were you looking forward the most to shoot?
There’s a couple of dream sequences that people will not expect. They’re weird. Bella has horrible nightmares in the book, so we thought about the most disturbing and scary way to play them on film. I’m not really Edward in those scenes, I’m a version of her insecurities.

Were you worried about committing to a sequel that could’ve compromised you and make you pass on other opportunities that maybe you might not be motivated to do in a few years?
A little bit, but the truth is that it’s very rewarding to do something that people care about so much. Because you even work harder than usual. And even if they don’t like the result at times, they cared enough to worry about the outcome.

Were you excited about filming in Italy with the rest of the cast?
Yes, a lot, I think Michael Sheen as Aro is brilliant. I was reading a scene where I’m supposed to get my butt kicked, and by a little girl, no less, and I thought it was wonderful. I don’t normally care for that kind of stuff, but in this movie I think it will look great. And Chris and I found a way to writhe in pain on screen, without having to twitch all over the floor, and that was very unpleasant.

And how was the set?
It’s visually strong, very strong. And it’s so cool. It’s Saint Marcus day, so everybody is wearing red cloaks, and it looks amazing.

The Twilight Effect

What has happened to you with all the massive phenomenon?
It’s weird. I was having dinner the other day and there was a magazine with me on the cover. And it was like being on the eye of the storm: you really don’t realize what’s going on. And seeing those covers and realizing that it’s you people are talking about, saying “Robert and Kristen, this and that”, it’s so bizarre.

Why do you think there’s such a level of adoration for this character?
I don’t know. I honestly don’t know. When I read the book I try to look for something that can help me relate to him, I don’t look for reasons why girls love him so much.

Could it be because he’s dangerous?
I think it’s because he’s willing to leave everything for her; there’s the appeal.

Do you still have a band?
I don’t have time for a band at the moment. But I love knowing that my friends in London, the ones that wrote the songs in Twilight with me, are getting record contracts because of their association with me and Twilight. Originally I played at a pub with three people, now they’re selling out venues for 500 perople.

How is acting any different from making/performing music?
Music puts you in a more vulnerable position, because you’re onstage and get an immediate reaction. But in many ways your more free because you’re not playing a part.

Is it weird to be known for your name now?
It is. It’s funny, I talked to Will Smith before presenting at the Oscars, and I asked him what to do onstage, and he said “Don’t try to do anything funny, just read the words. You can be funny when it’s your 4th time presenting”.

Would you like to become immortal?
I don’t know. If I had a reason to live forever I would.

Are Mexican fans crazy?
Yes, those three days in Mexico were very intense (laughs).

A idéia era trazer a lenda vampírica de volta ao cinema e à nova gerção. ntão, eu tentei uma coisa, que era interpretar um vampiro sem seguir nenhum caminho específico sobre como tal personagem devia ser interpretado, e me focando na solidão pós-adolescência de um personagem especial.

Bem, no livro, a presença de Edward é relativamente menor do que no filme...
No livro, Bella ouve a voz de Edward na mente dela. No filme, nós transformamos essa voz numa visão. E nós adicionamos uma cena de luta no final, o que me agradou bastante porque eu fico muito bem como lutador (risos).

Você já teve a impressão de que no centro do sucesso de Crepúsculo pode estar escondido um conservadorismo acerca da relação sexual de Bella e Edward?
Todo mundo poderia traduzir a história de um modo diferente que lhe agradasse. Pessoalmente, eu acho que essa abstinência sexual tem o resultado totalmente oposto. Ela cria uma tensão sexual que faz os fãs gritarem: eles têm que transar, eles têm que transar.

Aos 23 anos e com todo esse alvoroço em torno do seu nome, eu acredito que seja completamente normal se assustar com praticamente tudo.
Normalmente, eu me assusto com as fofocas e os boatos que leio na internet. Você não tem noção. Alguém disse que, durante as filmagens de Lua Nova, eu não cheirava bem porque não tomava banho.

Não sei o que você fez naquela época, mas tenho certeza de que hoje você teve tempo de tomar banho, já que você está com uma aparência e um cheiro ótimo.
(Sorri) O engraçado é que as filmagens nem haviam começando quando essa história começou a circular na internet.

Você interpretou Dali e Kristen interpretará Joan Jett. O envolvimento de vocês num romance ficcional os influenciou em escolher personagens sobre pessoas reais para continuar suas carreiras?
Há um processo muito interessante quando se decide interpretar um personagem não-fictício. Você estuda fotos, foca na linguagem corporal. Eu lembro de uma foto de Salvador Dali apontando para alguma coisa; eu passei horas tentando descobrir para o que ele estava apontando e porque ele o estava fazendo daquele jeito.

How do you cope with the pressure of the hysteria that your appearance causes to young girls after the success Twilight?
The way everyone gets through when being under pressure: I focus on my friends. Look, I shouldn't be ungrateful, besides the stress it's fun to get all this recognition. It's just that some things change in your life. I can't walk down the street alone, as i used to do and there are moments that in this recognition i feel extremely vulnerable.I try to keep my mind,to distinguish the jobs offered that will help me succeed and stay calm with madness and speed that all this is happening.

They've been so many vampire movies... I believe after your trilogy the amount will increase.Do you feel there's something special you've added through your performance to the cinema persona of the "immortals"?
The idea was to bring back for the cinema and the new generation the vampire legend. So, I tried something, that was to play the vampire without following a specific road on how such a role should be played, but focusing on the after adolescent loneliness of a special character.

Well, in the book Edward's presence is relatively smaller that in the movie...
In the book Bella hears Edward's voice in her mind. In the movie we gave this voice the figure of a vision.And we added a battle scene at the end,which i really enjoyed 'cause i look amazing as a fighter(laughs..).

Have you ever felt that in the center of the Twilight success hides a well concealed conservatism about the sexual relationship of Bella and Edward?
Everyone could translate the story as they wish. Personally, I feel that this sexual abstinence works in the complete opposite way. It creates a sexual tension that makes fans scream: they have to have sex, they have to have sex.
Would you appear naked like Daniel Radcliffe did in a movie or a play?
The question is no longer if i "would" cause Little Ashes already contains such scenes .

Got me! I would ask that. from a sexually conservative vampire to Salvador Dali and whatever this means...it must have been a long run.

How did you feel through this distance?
At the beginning i totally freaked out. The truth is that the Spanish have a completely different opinion about nudity than English ones. I think of different answers i could give like l a had my reproductive organs expanded(giggles). The truth is I did not really know what I freaked out a bit.

At the age of 23 with all this fuss around your name,I believe it is totally normal to freak out about almost everything.
I freak out mostly by all the gossip and rumors I read on the net.You can not even imagine.Someone wrote that during the filming of "New Moon" I didn't smell nice cause I didn't shower.

I am not sure what you did back there but I am sure that today you got the time to take a shower as you seem and smell great.
(Giggles) The funny think is that filming had not even begun when this thing started circulating the net.

You portrayed Dali and Kristen will play Joan Jett. Did both your involvement in a science fiction romance influenced you in choosing roles of real people to continue on with your career?
The is this procedure in acting that is really interesting when portraying a non fiction character. You study pictures, focus on the body language. I remember a picture of Salvatore Dali pointing at something, I spent hours trying to figure out what he was pointing at and why was he doing it that way.

Is there another famous personality you would want to play?
Van Morrison,but I do not think they would ever give me the part.

Have you ever got to the point to compare your passion for cinema with your other great passion for music?
No. For starters I can not live without music, furthermore I always said that even though acting is one of my biggest passions, plan number 2 for me was to become famous via music.When I was younger I wanted to become a politician but I think it is too late now for me.

Now that you are famous does it bother you that girls might want to be with you just because of fame?
If they are pretty it doesn't matter(giggles). Even thought I am completely sure that anyone who talks to me for 5-10 min stops having any interest in me. Anyway now I do not have a girlfriend and I can not figure out why? Aren't you supposed to be luckier in this field when you are famous?

Você acha fácil conhecer mulheres?
Eu costumava achar, mas não tenho conversado com nenhuma há um bom tempo. Eu fico com medo porque sou fotografado o tempo todo. Atualmente, basta que eu converse com uma menina para ela virar minha "namorada".

Você é a sensação do momento em Hollywood. Isso deve lhe dar algumas fãs bem fanáticas.
A coisa mais esquisita é quando as pessoas ficam esperando fora do seu hotel. Não dá pra ignorar isso. Eu estava andando pela rua com os fones no ouvido outro dia e percebi que havia seis pessoas atrás de mim. Eu deixei os fones no ouvido e continuei andando.

É bem "rock and roll", não?

Você é um ator britânico que faz muito sucesso nos Estados Unidos - nós perdemos você?
Não! Eu gosto dos Estados Unidos e gosto de muitas coisas em LA, mesmo que você tenha que dirigir onde quer que você vá e eu seja um péssimo motorista! Mas, mesmo assim, não tenho passado muito tempo lá ultimamente, ainda sinto como se eu morasse em Londres. Quando eu voltei para o Natal, tudo estava do mesmo jeito. Eu ainda tenho um quarto na casa dos meus pais.

Tem algum poster constrangedor na parede do seu quarto na casa dos seus pais?
Eu tinha posters de Linda Blair e Kate Moss! (risos)

Você acha que essa subida rápida ao sucesso mudou você?
Não sei. Eu prefiro pensar que não mudei muito. Eu ainda estou esperando que minha mente se acostume, se adapte a tudo isso, mas, dentro de mim, eu não acho que mudei coisa alguma.

Eu virei ator por acaso - eu não queria atuar. Eu queria ser um músico e tocar piano em bares. Eu queria ir para Nice e tocar na praia usando um smoking. Eu achava isso legal. Mas, faz um tempo que não componho nada.

Interpretando um vampiro, você deve ter pensado sobre imortalidade. Você pagaria algum preço para viver para sempre?
Depende. Se você tem algo a que se prender, sim. Mas, agora, eu penso... na. Se alguém me falasse "você vai morrer em breve", eu pensaria "ao menos eu não preciso mais fazer exercícios".

Em Lua Nova, Edward tem uma participação menor do que em Crepúsculo. Como fizeram para mudar isso no filme?

É do tipo que quer fazer a coisa certa. Um tipo normal. Ou seja, que comete erros. E é engraçado como as fãs o vêem como o tipo perfeito. Mas, ele não é. Ele é ciumento, mas tenta ser uma boa pessoa, seguindo seu coração.

Por que preferiu ser ator a músico? Ou você acha que pode fazer as duas coisas o mesmo tempo?
Acredito que em muitos aspectos dá para fazer as duas coisas ao mesmo tempo, mas é muito difícil seguir com seriedade duas carreiras. Na verdade, nunca tive interesse em ganhar dinheiro com música. Eu faço música mais por razões terapêuticas. Mas, acredito que a música ajuda com a atuação no que diz respeito ao timing. Você fica menos tímido. Eu toco bastante violão porque não dá para levar um piano para todos os lugares (gesticula os movimentos e ri). Eu gosto do que sinto na hora, eu amo esse setimento. Mas, eu tocava piano antes de tocar violão. Estou começando a tocar bastante outra vez. É sempre bom tocar outra vez. Eu amo Van Morrison e todas aquelas músicas dos anos 70.

Você viaja por todo o mundo, isso deve tirar de você um tempo para fazer aquilo que gosta. Isso lhe incomoda muito? O quanto você está disposto a suportar?
Eu não me importo com o aspecto comercial. Devo dizer que, se eu pudesse fazer as mesmas coisas que estou fazendo nesse momento sem que ninguém me conhecesse, eu amaria. Edward has a much smaller role in New Moon. How much was this changed for the movie?
It didn’t change that much. Or maybe it did. There’s a sort of new image of me that Bella sees, or creates. You’d think she went mad. She thinks she has visions. I’m not really that much in those scenes. Those scenes are mixed with memories of her, and fantasies.

The tension for preserving the virginity is a very important subject in the saga.
In many ways it is. I think this was done because Stephenie loves that kind of tension; having an unfullfilled desire the whole time, that’s the best kind of love. Makes everything more dramatic, romantic, tragic. People can see it in many different ways.

But how do you see it?
I always try to find the best in everything. Edward is a very human character, and I’m like him in many ways. He doubts himself a lot. But he wants to do the right thing. He’s a normal guy, he makes mistakes. And it’s funny how fans see him as a perfect guy. He’s not; he’s a jealous person. But he does try to be a good person while following his heart.

Why did you prefer to be an actor and not a musician? Or do you think you can be a musician as well?
I think in many ways you can do both, but it’s very hard to follow both careers seriously. And to be honest, I wasn’t very interested in making money with music. I make music for therapeutic reasons. But music can help acting, timing wise. You become less shy. It’s like when you’re with people, there’s a barrier. You feel naked. I think that helps.

Robert shares with us that he’s writing music for a movie.
“Yes I wrote music. I’m writing music for a movie, but it’s just the music. I won’t be singing in it”.

Will you ever write music for any of the Twilight films?
The music I’m writing is for a movie that it might never get made.

What’s your favorite instrument to play? What is your instrument of choice when you’re composing new music?
I play the guitar a lot because you cn’t take a piano everyhere (mimics the movements and laughs). I like the feeling that I get, I love it. But I played the piano before I played the guitar. I’m starting to play a lot again. It’s always nice to play again. I love Van Morrison and all that 70’s music.

You travel all over the world, that must take time for you to do the things you like to do. Does it bother you much, or how much are you willing to take?
I don’t mind the commercial aspect. I must say, if I could do the same things I’m doing right now without having anyone know who I am, I’d love it. When you’re very famous, you can’t lead a normal life anymore and that’s scary. You might not be able to relate to normal things again. You can’t walk into a building, you can’t sit down for coffee anymore and find inspiration to do things. People asking for my autograph, I can’t relate to that. That’s not interesting; it’s annoying. And it’s very scary to think that you’ve lost any normal life you had. I’m still new at this, but you know what? The fans love Edward, not me.

I read somewhere that you love Jack Nicholson and that he’s you role model.
Yes, in a weird way. It has to do with the decisions he made in his career. It’s strange, but I don’t think there’s another actor as coherent as he is. And with the same quality of work.

Is there any younger actors that you like?
Romain Duris. And Val Kilmer.

You’re the most talked about person on the internet, do you read what people say about you?
I did it for a few months, but I’m done with that.

Why?
It’s easy to become obsessed with it. ‘I have to change’. When everything starts, that’s what you think ‘I have to change’. Why? It’s so stupid. A bad article can really get to you. And if you keep looking…

Did you travel with friends? Did you bring anyone to Cannes?
No, I’m here by myself.

Where do you live right now?
Nowhere. I’ve been working for the past year and half. I have no home, or anything.

Do you feel like establishing somewhere? Buying a house, maybe in LA?
It doesn’t make sense, I don’t go there very often. I’m maybe there one week at a time, stay in hotels. But it would be nice to have a place wher I can out down all my things.

A place to call your home? Or just a place where you can leave all your things?
I have a lot of books, but I don’t care very much for other posessions. I only have suitcases in my hotel rooms.

RP: Yes, I saw that there are 7 unauthorized biographies, and they all start at my 20th. I think Im dealing with it as good as possible. The past year, I have been working non-stop so the biggest Twilight craziness passed me by. My life and Twilight, it are 2 separate things.
Being famous is a lifestyle, but Im only a foetus in that celebrity-world. Im better at it than in the beginning, but I would hate it if there would be people hanging around my house for the rest of my life. It would drive me crazy. Why do people want a picture of me and them at all costs? I don’t get that. I think of myself as boring.

How different was shooting New Moon in comparison with the first part?
RP: Very different. With the first movie, there were a lot of people all pulling in a different direction. The studio wanted to create a basis for a franchise, because it had already been settled that it would be a trilogy. The bosses thought the movie had to appeal to as much people as possible. Director Catherine Hardwicke had made a lot of independent movies and she sometimes was like an unguided projectile, she had so much energy. Kristen and I had our own ideas about the characters and we both are rather stubborn.
But the mega success of the first movie has made everyone more calm. We are less insecure. The studio bosses know that we are going to make the right decisions. We also have Chris Weitz as the new director. He’s very calm and got everyone ready very fast. We have all worked so hard.

Have you seen New Moon a few times yet?
RP: Once. I still think it’s a torture to see myself on the big screen. But this time it wasn’t a punishment. Surprisingly, I enjoyed it. That hadn’t happened since the beginning of my career.

Don’t you think it’s frightening to see how obsessed some fans are?
RP: Definitely. When the Twilight hype broke out, I sometimes had visions of my getting stabbed by a crazy fan. Those crowds at premieres… Im not at ease. When we were shooting New Moon in Vancouver, some fans would be out there for 3 days in a row, good or bad weather. At times like that, your instinct tells you: that is a weirdo and your imagination runs wild. But mostly it’s not so bad when you go and talk to that person.
Twilight is just my job, but for a fan, it’s something they desperately want to be a part of. Is that wrong? Im not so sure anymore. A fan is a fan, that’s all. It just takes a while before you get used to the fact that what you do, gets appreciated by people.

Have you ever been a fan of someone?
RP: When I first saw ‘One flew over the cuckoo’s nest’, I was 16 and that movie has influenced me so much. I even started to dress like Jack Nicholson. That period lasted for a long time. I also had a thing for Patricia Arquette. But I don’t think that any of that has influenced my work. (laugh)

In New Moon, the young Taylor Lautner plays a wolf, Jacob. What did you think when you saw his muscles?
RP: That I needed to hit the gym stat. (laugh) No, I think it’s ok. It’s funny: for some reason, when you’re an actor in a teen movie, they expect you to have a six pack. So when I see a guy that meets every expectation of a teenage girl, I do get a complex yeah. Actually, that was perfect to get into my role. I now know the feeling of having to prove myself against someone younger than me.

You have a great connection with Kristen, that isn’t a secret. But in this movie, there’s also a lot of chemistry between her and Taylor. Were you jealous?
RP: No. In New Moon, we only have like 3 scenes with the three of us. I barely had the chance to be jealous. When I had to work, Taylor wasn’t around because Bella and Jacobs story line was developing without me. In Eclipse, the third movie, which we wrapped a while ago, it’s totally different. There’s a lot more interaction between the characters. Taylor and I were teasing each other the whole time.

This time, Taylor is the leading man. Does that take some pressure off your shoulders?
RP: Asolutely. I keep on saying this is Taylors movie. Im not the lead role. He’s fully responsible and that’s a win-win situation. If it’s a flop, I can always say that it’s because Im in it less. (laugh)

What’s next on your agenda?
RP: It has been a weird year. I have been working non-stop, with 4 days off at the most. First there was New Moon, then Eclipse. I was pretty relieved when we could wrap at the end of October. I finally got to sleep in. But we didn’t get much rest, with the promo tour for New Moon coming up. In February I will go to Budapest to shoot Bel Ami. Not with Nicole Kidman, as reported first. Im not allowed to say who it is yet. Ive also signed on for Unbound Captives, a romantic drama with Rachel Weisz. But chances are that before all that, I'm expected on the set of the forth Twilight movie.

Move over Zac efron… Have you met the High School Musical star?
We met at an awards show. He’s the new face of success. But he’s all the opposite of what I thought he would be. He’s so honest and down to earth. You’d think he’s so prepared for the press, but he’s not.

What do fans say about you when they meet you in person?
They are increadibly opinionated. They have very clear ideas as to how I should live my life. Who knew 15 years old could be so moralistic?
Is it true that you did castings for vampire characters before?
Yes, I did an audition for True Blood, but that didn’t work out. I didn’t think I would get the role of Edward Cullen either, because the character is very enigmatic. I didn’t want to play the biggest vampire stereotype, so I tried to humanize him.

When you got the role a lot of fans were very angry….
They didn’t want me. They sent me hate messages and the Internet was full of comments. They said I looked like a bum.

Do you understand why Edward appeals so much to young girls?
No, I don’t get why people like this character in such an obsessive level. The fact that he’s so polite and opens doors for girls, all that. I don’t get why teenagers like this stuff.

Did you get along with Kristen Stewart?
In the beginning I thought: “She’s so serious, so I have to be very serious too”. And I went on without talking to her for like two weeks. She must have thought I was stuck up. I only spoke to her about the movie, other movies, books, serious stuff. But I felt like an idiot. I dropped the act and we got along great.

It’s been said on numerous occasions that you’re in love with her and that you proposed to her on the set of the movie…
I don’t remember that happening, but if that’s what she said, then it’s true.

How did your career being?
I started as a model when I was 12. I was the youngest one in the agency. I was so skinny, I looked like a girl, and back then the whole androgenous look was in. Then I did some amateur theater and then I began to go to castings.

And you were chosen for Reese Witherspoon’s movie Vanity Fair…
Yes, but my part was cut from the movie. That’s how I got Harry Potter, the casting director felt guilty.

Why didn’t you get more roles after Harry Potter?
I went on several auditions but they kept telling me I was scary….

And your agent sent you to LA to do more castings and you got the role of Edward. Weren’t you sent to media training after you were chosen for the role?
Yes. My agent kept getting messages like “he’s resisting the training!” (laughs), I just didn’t want to answer like I was a robot. Not even little children like to hear the same answers, it’s boring!

What have you been up to since you finished Twilight?
I’ve been living in LA. I learned how to drive and I’ve been exploring the city. It’s a very different culture from London. There isn’t many pubs and people here don’t get how normal it is in London to just go out for a beer. They think it’s bizarre.

Do you have a car yet?
A 1989 BMW convertible. The convertible top is broken, the dashboard caught on fire when I was driving and the back seats look like a dumpster with all my old trash. And I just hope the red button that just turned on isn’t something I should worry about. (laughs).

Have you made any new friends in Hollywood?
A couple. Most of them are from the industry. I go out with club promoters and PR people. I always get my picture taken coming out of the dodgiest places. It’s embarrasing. I went out everyday for like a week until I realized that people must think I was some sort of drunk.

What do you do on your spare time?
I’m a musician. I know all actors say they’re musicians, but I’ve been doing it for years. I play the piano since I was four and classical guitar since I was five. I just started playing blues and similar stuff. I’m not a virtuoso, but I’m not that bad either.

You used to be seen playing in little bars,
I did it a couple of times, until some people filmed me and put me up on youtube. They ruined the experience. Now it would be impossible to play again like that.

Who’s your favorite musician?
Van Morrison. I own all his albums.

Your sister is in the music business as well, isn’t she?
Lizzy had a very successful song with her band Aurora. My other sister works in advertising. I’m the youngest.

They treated you like their own doll, didn’t they?
They dressed me up like a girl, yes! (laughs). But it all changed when I turned 12.

You play Salvador Dali in you next movie, how was the experience?
It’s marked a before and an after. I got obsessed with Dali, read everything I could about him. It’s the first role in which I could reflect about it more seriously. He was the weirdest bloke, but I feel I understood him. He was very, very shy.

It looks like you have a bright future a head of you….
It’s funny how things change. After being unemployed for so long, you start thinking “I’m not gonna mess this up again”. So now, I’ll only think about how I’m going to play a role. My only concern is to not mess this up. I don’t want to be an idiot and that’s a real possibility.

8) Ele pensa. Wow - outra novidade (ele anda; ele fala - RISOS!). Essa razão, de qualquer modo, também fica evidente nas entrevistas dele. Robert parece querer dar uma resposta pensada às perguntas que se são feita quase sempre. As próprias respostas dele parecem ser de alguém que pensa em outros assuntos que não resultados esportivos e fast food. Isso faz com que uma pessoa queria ler algo que Robert possa ter escrito. Dizem que ele faz diários e escreve roteiros. É uma prova. Catherine Hardwicke, diretora de Crepúsculo, diz que ele tem, ou é, uma "alma velha". Meninas inteligentes sabem o que isso significa.

Robert Pattinson: "Everything happens so fast”

Technikart Team was in charge of the daily report "SuperCannes" during the whole Festival. She came across Robert Pattinson, the teenagers’ idol. This is a record of a Live interview.

Technikart : What happened yesterday Rob? We were told about a riot in the whereabouts of Carlton…
Robert Pattinson: Oh yes, there was one indeed (laughs but upset). I was having my lunch when about 700 people stuck in front of the restaurant’s entrance near the beach. It was kind of funny… I was carried by 3 bodyguards up to the car which was parked in front of. I was literally carried, I didn’t touch the ground. This is so weird.

Technikart: This is your life since about a year now ?
Robert Pattinson : Everything got more intense 6 months ago. It’ s difficult to handle it out, it’s too fast. I don’t have the necessary distance, not enough to be able to find a parade to all this mess.

Technikart : George Clooney has a trick to escape fans: he takes Brad Pitt with him.
Robert Pattinson : Oh yeah, I guess it must be efficient but you have to be friends with Brad Pitt…

Technikart: Is it not the case ?
Robert Pattinson: I don’t know him. But the thing with celebrity, you can’t fight it, it’s useless, you can’t run away . When it was something you were not looking forward all your life, something you have never dreamed of, you can freely not give a damn about it. They can shout my name, if they want to, but I can ignore it. I didn’t sign a contract with Disney, no clause compels me to smile to photographs.

Technikart: How are you feeling about shooting a film knowing the next one, and also the next one and the next one are already on the draft? How long are you still stuck into "Twilight"?
Robert Pattinson: In fact, it’s pretty cool, because my character can’t get old! To me, it’s the key of this adventure. I’m not in the same situation as the Harry Potter characters , who spent 10 years of their lives in these movies. There’s nothing more frightening than signing up a contract for several movies, but, in fact, in September I will have wrapped 3 of the 4 Twilight series. Only in a year. New Moon will be released in November, Eclipse next summer and Breaking Dawn at Xmas 2010. Soon I will be freed from my contract.

Technikart: How is it in Cannes, Rob? Do you have fun?
Robert Pattinson: So so… I would like to do some things. I am not doing anything. I hate being photographed. But I like the hotel…

Technikart: Which hotel is it?
Robert Pattinson: L’hôtel du Cap. It’s like a job. I have business lunches. I leave restaurants on board speed boats, I feel like James Bond, this is cool. However, I will have time to attend Tarantino’s movie. But I guess the climbing of the red carpet will ruin everything. I already hate it. (he pretends he is in front of a crowd of imaginary photographs) "Yeah , all your fucking photos will be on the headline tomorrow!"

Entrevista: Metro France

Yellow lenses and pale complexion, Rob Pattinson stopped for a few minutes on the set of “New Moon” to talk with us about the successful franchise and his recent career.

Metro France: When we met you in Paris, you could walk freely in the street without being noticed. I guess things must have changed since!
Robert Pattinson: I can’t walk in the street anymore, except if I’m dressed up! (laughs). In fact it’s a relief to come back on a set.

Metro France: Were you surprised bu the huge success of the first sequel ?
Robert Pattinson: I am still surprised! Even here, on the set. Yesterday, there were 300 people waiting to catch a glimpse of us. It’s absolutely crazy: everyday I talk to someone who loves it, or who knows someone who loves Twilight! It’s so crazy that I don’t dare get outside. Even when I arrive at an airport, there’s always a custom officer to ask me an autograph for his daughter !

Metro France: Did you choose a different approach for Edward?
Robert Pattinson: Yes, a lot. I consider now he is a ghost, a thing out of Bella’s mind. I am more a memory than a character, which is very weird. I must give the impression that his world is about to collapse any second.

Metro France: Are you going to sing again on the soundtrack ?
Robert Pattinson: I don’t think so, even if it’s too early to state it! Twilight’s soundtrack sold out so well that a lot of famous bands want to be part of it !

Metro France: You must have a lot of propositions. How do you choose the “good ones” ?
Robert Pattinson: My schedule is tight up to the end of the year, and all the roles I have chosen are completely different one from another. I can’t give you more details because all the contracts are not signed yet. But obviously, I don’t choose according to the type of film but according to the screenplay and the character. Only one thing matters : I must like them.

Metro France: When you were a child , were you fond of a particular actor?
Robert Pattinson: As a kid, I didn’t know I was going to be an actor. So when I started, it took me 3 or 4 years to realize it was really my job. However, if I had to choose, I would say Jack Nicholson and Jean-Paul Belmondo.

Metro France: Belmondo?
Robert Pattinson: I like his being an anti hero, the kind of actor who seems to be self confident and who doesn’t mind assuming his feelings.

We’re at the Beverly Hills Four Seasons talking with Ron about what it’s like to be in the middle of a fenomenon. He told us a few secrets. That he’s really bad at baseball, that he wrote a song for the Twilight soundtrack, what was it like playing Dali and working in New Moon.

You worked in the soundtrack for Twilight…
Last year I was writing songs and I think Nikki Reed gave Catherine Hardwicke a cd. She called me and said “Check this out!”, and she showed me some random scenes in the movie with my music. I thought it was so bizarre but it was ok. I didn’t think anything of it, I never thought it would be on the soundtrack but when they were I agreed to it. Now this has blown up and it looks as though I’m all ready to sign a record deal but I’m not even sure. They were just a couple of songs that I wrote some years ago and that have nothing to do with Twilight. I thought I should have recorded them under a different name, but everybody told me that this could be a really good thing, marketing wise.

Did you ever think you could dedicate completely to your music after this?
Not as a career, because that’s too hard. I think that if you start to write music profesionally it can be very stressful. Especially when you’re performing in front of thousands.
But if you only have the desire to write, then there’s nothing wrong with it. Unless you’re thinking about making money out of it.

Was it easy for you to get involved with the whole idea of vampires?
Not really. Actually, I was trying to play Edward as human as possible, instead of playing him as a fantastic creature. I thought about being bitten by one of them and becoming a vampire and living forever, of course, and everything that comes with immortality but I think that knowing everything about the vampires’ existence made me understand them better. I know Edward was an average 17 year old who got bitten by someone and three days later he woke up with insatiable need to drink human blood. After seeing all of that and realizing that his life has changed, that he can’t sleep anymore, that he’s increadibly fast and strong, that he’s going to live forever was something that it was hard to imagine as a human being. But I decided not to play him thinking as a vampire, I just added up everything he was, including him being a vampire. That was on the top of the list of things he is.

You look very handsome in the movie, do you feel any pressure about living up to that image?
I don’t like to see myself because I start feeling weird, like I’m going to be sick. But there’s also the thing that playing a vampiure is not something that it’s within my range. I always try to bring something positive in any character that I’m playing. Although I think people love the bad boy who doesn’t care about anything, and the more worse he is, the more appealing he is to people.

Do you think fame is fun, or does it bother you?
I really don’t think about it too much. I mean, we’ve visited great cities promoting the movie and people are so excited about it everywhere, they scream. But when you leave the press room, nobody knows about you anymore. And everything separates itself. Like, you’re living two different lives.
This might be different when the sequel comes out. I’m still so immersed in the Twilight phase since the movie came out and then I’m shooting the new movie which will have its own promotion. So I know what to expect when people approach me on the street now because some fans call me Edward, so I don’t think fame will affect me.

What do you think about so many girls having your poster on their bedrooms now?
When I first signed up for it I didn’t realize it would target so many teenagers. I thought it woulkd be just and indie movie that would take on vampires with an actress doing sweet and intelligent things. I never thought it would become something so big.

What was more difficult? Filming Twilight or promoting it?
(laughs) Acting is perhaps more sincere. Promoting is sort of easy, you just talk all day. But I know that for some actors it can be very stressful and it can be a very annoying thing to say yes all the time. But it all comes down to what kind of movie you’re doing. If it’s a drama, you have to be very serious about it, unlike with comedies, for example.

Tell us about the baseball scene. We’re told you were not very good at it.
Who told you that?! I suck at baseball. For some reason, Catherine wanted me to be like a pro, and I thought, Why? Edward is a vampire, why would he have to play baseball perfectly? I never understood it, and I always questioned it. He doesn’t need to want to play, know the rules or need a bat, but Catherine said this scene was more about representing the union of a team, the union of a little community ready to defend and support each other. But yeah, I’m terrible at it. Don’t be surprised if one day you see people dressed as vampires playing baseball (laughs) that would be weird. That what be weird. But for me that was the hardest scene to shoot.

Some time ago you played Salvador Dali. Is that movie coming out soon?
I filmed that before Twilight. It was such a small movie that I don’t know what would’ve become of it if I hadn’t been in Twilight. It was a fun and interesting job.

It must’ve been a very interesting world to explore…
Of course! It was the first work I ever did in which I became completely obsessed with. Then I adapted that same mentality for Twilight. But the difference is that during all this time in Spain I as the only person on the set who didn’t speak English, so I spent all the time reading about Dali and rehearsing my lines. I think that’s why I dove in so deep inside the character, in his personality and his life. And I feel that and actor has the power to change, even if it’s just a little bit, the story of a character. Whether it’s by changing the voice, the attitude, the way you move, because you not only have to follow the instructions of a director. You have to put a lot of effort on your own. I think it would be so stresfful for directors to have actors who ask them What do you want me to do? I think it’s ridiculous, an actor shouldn’t act like a puppet, especially if he’s being paid so much to do his work.

Catherine seems to be one of the most human directors out there.
Definitely. Eventhough I did argue with her over certain scenes, most of the times I agreed with her. There’s even some thing about the way she directs that are so new to me, that I couldn’t disagree with them. For instance, in the script or in the way we would structure a scene. The point is that when you’re an actor you should merge your suggestions with the original ideas, and realizing who your director is, otherwise the job becomes stressful and it’s horrible arguing against everything.

The Dali you played was the Dali he was before the world met him.
Yes, that’s exactly what the story was about. In a way the plot is a lot like Twilight. It’s the story of two characters who because of fears and insecurities can’t consumate their love.

Are you looking forward to New Moon?
Definitely. I filmed Twilight not thinking it would become a trilogy, so if the first movie captured people, the sequel will immortalize the characters and their stories.
